By the time I was in Jr. High, I was watching it every Wednesday night from the Olympic Auditorium. Those were the days when Dick Lane was the foremost commentator and the alliance was the NWA. As I grew older and was able to drive I went to many Wednesday night shows and have met such greats as Black Gordman, The Peace Brothers and The Great Goliath.
I can still remember one of the best matches I have ever seen. It was Fred Blassie vs The Destroyer for the U.S. Title. Blassie not only regained the title that night, but bit through both masks that The Destroyer wore that night. Never did get to see The Destroyer's face as a ring assistant covered him with a towel and led him from the ring.
The first outside match I ever saw was at the L.A. Coliseum. The matches included BoBo Brazil vs The Sheik and John Tolos vs Ernie Ladd. It had one of the largest audiences of its time, over 24,000. Things sure have changed in 30+ years.
One of my all time favorite wrestlers was Abdullah The Butcher. He was awesome on TV and even more so in person. I saw him fight Dusty Rhodes at the Omni, in Atlanta, Ga. in the '70's and it was one of the best matches I have ever seen.
On my visit to Atlanta, I found Abdullah's restaurant, "Abdullah the Butcher House of Ribs & Chinese Food", located at 2387 Fairburn Rd. S.W., Atlanta, Ga.; phone number: (404) 629-2332.
What
ever you do, don't complain about the food ;-)
.
Actually,
Abdullah was a great host (yes, he was there) and the food was great.
As can be seen, he was more than willing to pose for photos. My friends
and I were treated as if he had known us for years. It was one of
the highlights of my visit. He also has a video tape of some of his
matches from Japan, including one with Hulk Hogan and a tag team match
with the Sheik (the original) vs Dory Funk Jr and Terry Funk. If
you are ever in the Atlanta area, it is a must visit for any wrestling
fan.
